Nation Ford Students Win SCSPA Awards

Dominating the state’s “Excellence in Student Newspaper Awards,” The Talon Staff won 18 awards, varying from writing and photography to design and infographics, on Dec. 20 from the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA).

The adviser and editor-in-chief select and submit pieces for competitions. A professional, experienced journalist or certified instructor evaluates each contest entry according to SCSPA standards. The competition recognizes excellence in student journalism gives opportunities to compete in the state-wide contests. The organization also offers college scholarships.

“Colleges love to see students who are engaged and curious,” says Mrs. Beth Swann, journalism and creative writing teacher. “Student journalists are critical thinkers who know how to research and communicate -- whether it be in writing, design, or photography.”
